Newbie needs Pre-Hardmode help

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and thought about posting because the Wiki isn't helping me in some points and I'm also not a native English speaker, so some parts of it are also hard to understand for me. I read as much as I could on the Wiki, though.

I bought Terraria almost two weeks ago and have a lot of fun with it! I have a few questions when it comes to Hardmode-preparations since I have no real way of knowing what to expect there yet besides what I understood from the Wiki.

DPS without attacking

I was messing around with hoiks and then when I looked at my DPS tracker it said that I was doing 219 DPS even though I wasn't even holding a weapon or attacking I was just standing still. I have no idea how I did this and why it is happening.
